Magic Effect

.

A spectator is asked to call out a three digit number, which is written down. Another spectator is asked to make certain calculations with the numbers, and announce the result. He is then asked to look in the telephone book at a page and name indicated by the results and concentrate on the name at that number. The magician concentrates, deeply and announces the name that the spectator has been concentrating only. Has the magician really read the spectator's mind?

Magic Method


Before staring this trick, turn to page 108 in the telephone book and count down to the 9th name on the page. Write this name on a slip of paper and seal it in an envelope. Ask someone to call out a three digit number, or have three different spectators each call out a one digit number. Write this down in plain view, on a slate or large sheet of paper.

Invite another spectator to come up to make some calculations. For example, suppose the number was 653. Ask him to reverse the number (356), and to subtract the lower number from the higher:

653-356 = 297

.
Ask him now to take the result (297), reverse it, (792) and add the two together:

.
297+792=1089

.
The answer will always be 1089, no matter what numbers are used. If only two figures result from the subtraction, be sure to add a zero at the left, such as 079.

Now the spectator who is holding the telephone book is asked to look on the page indicated by the first three numbers, 108, and to count down to the name indicated by the last number, 9.

The spectator is asked to concentrate on the name on the page and the magician appears to be concentrating also to try and read the spectators mind. After a short time, the magician announces the name that the spectator has been concentrating on. This is quite convincing mind reading magic. The trick can be varied by this method. Write the name to be chosen on a piece of paper which is then placed in an envelope and the envelope is then sealed. The spectator is presented with this envelope at the beginning of the trick which he is told, contains the magicians prediction. At the end of the trick, he is asked to open the envelope and announce the prediction.

Mind Reading Trick

Magic Effect : In this baffling routine the magician asks a member of the audience, a series of questions, a lot of them that are unique to that person. The spectator is asked to write each answer on a piece of paper and place the piece of paper in glass. At the same time, the magician is seen to be concentrating deeply and writing his prediction on a separate piece of paper which he also puts in another glass. After the last question has been asked, the magician's predicted answers are compared with the spectator's answers and are found to be the same. This can get an amazing reaction from the audience as the magician is seen to be able to read thoughts.

Magic Method: The spectator is asked a series of questions and asked to write them on a piece of paper and place the piece of paper in a glass. After each answer has been placed in the glass by the spectator, the magician asks the spectator what answer they had given. The magician acknowledges that he had also predicted that answer and placed it in his glass.
Really, the magician writes the spectators answer one question behind. The spectator has told the magician, the answer to the last question asked which the magician will write and put in his glass after asking the next question. When the first question has been asked and the spectator reveals his answer, the magician has placed his supposed prediction in another glass at the same time. What he has actually written on his paper is "carrot " which is the most probable answer to the final question that the spectator will be asked shortly. The will allow the magician to write each answer as the spectator reveals it. The spectator will be unaware that the magician is writing his answers one question behind. Take out the papers from the glasses and pair up the answers. Stand back and watch the amazed expression of your onlookers.

You should find that most people will choose carrot as their choice of vegetable, however this will not always be the case. If they choose another answer then the audience will still be impressed that you have predicted the other answers.

Magic Envelope Trick

Magic Effect:

The magician asks for a volunteer to write down four numbers on a piece of paper.
The magician asks the volunteer to TOTAL up the numbers.
The magician opens a sealed envelope and it has the same number as the TOTAL!
(or have the magic puppet pull out an envelope and hand it to the magician. Have the puppet "whisper" to the magician to open up the envelope.)

Magic Supplies:

piece of paper
a pen
an envelope

Magic Secret:

Before the show, write down a four figure number that is 2 times the current year's date. For example, in the year 2000, the number would = 4000. In the year 2008, the number would = 4016
Seal the paper in the envelope.
At the show, ask a helper to write down the year he was born.
Ask him to write down the year of an important event in his life (for example, the year he started school or the year he lost his first tooth)
Ask him to write down his age
Ask him to write down the number of years that have passed since the important event
(these numbers HAVE to be right *grin*... if it's been 4 years since the event and he writes down 3, the trick won't work)
The years have to be whole numbers (he can't say he's 6 and a half years old)
Have the assistant TOTAL the 4 numbers.
Open the envelope. The TOTAL will be the same as the number you already wrote down!

Magic Bottle Trick

Magic Bottle Trick

Magic Effect:

The magician asks for a volunteer from the audience who looks inside a bottle to make sure it's a normal, empty container.The volunteer returns the magic bottle and then examines a magic wand to ensure it is normal.The magician drops the wand into the bottle (noting how easily it falls in).He/she turns bottle over and lets go of the wand. The wand magically remains suspended in the bottle.

Magic Supplies:

a magic wand (could use a pencil instead) that is taller than the bottle (when you drop the wand into the bottle, part of it should still be sticking up through the opening.
a bottle that has an opening large enough to fit the wand in (but not too big).
The bottle should not be see-throughan eraser If you don't have a bottle that is dark, you can put some dark paint inside the bottle and shake it around so the inside is painted.
Cut a piece off the eraser, just large enough to wedge the wand into the opening of the bottle. The eraser is what makes the trick work!

Magic Secret:

Pass the bottle to the volunteer and ask them to make sure its empty.Take back the bottle and give your friend the wand. Meanwhile, slip the piece of eraser into the bottle without anyone seeing (you can have it in your pocket until this point). You'll need to practice this a few times.Take the wand back and drop it into the bottle.Pick up the wand and bottle and turn them VERY SLOWLY upside down (mumble all sorts of magical enchantments while you're doing this). Pull on the wand slightly when the bottle is turning over so the piece of eraser gets wedged into the opening (you'll need to practice this a few times too).Let go of the wand... PRESTO! It doesn't fall out.Slowly turn upright again. Let go of everything and PRESTO the wand remains suspended in the bottle (it doesn't fall back down).To remove the wand, push it slightly to release the rubber and then take it out.

Magician Vanishes The Coin

Quick Coin Vanish

Magic Effect: A coin is placed onto the magic desk. It is picked up and it magically vanishes.

Magic Method: First, let me tell you this is about as easy as a magic trick as it gets. Set the coin onto the magic desk with your lefthand. Say something like "Look at this" and reach over with your righthand. Then press down on the coin with your index, middle, and 3rd fingers with yourhand and armparrallel with the magic desk. Slide the magical coin towards you keeping in mind it should be completely covered up. Slide the coin off the magic desk so it falls into your lap. Touch your thumbto your middlefinger as if you are picking up the magic coin as it reaches the edge of the magic desk. Keeping all yourfingers closed still. Stare at where the coin should be as you slowly move your handaway from you back to about 6 inches above where the coin originally was. Start moving your thumbin a magical circular motion as if the coin is dissapearing. Slowly turn yourhand around and spread yourfingers apart. Now the rest is up to you. The more surprised you act and if you act like you were all fortunate to see a miracle, people will believe the trick even more.

Icy Magic

Magic Effect : Pour some water into a cup, magically blow on the cup and then turn it upside down where out pops some ice cubes.

Magic Supplies : You need a cup or glass that you can't see through. You also need a small sponge and and some ice cubes.

Magic Method : Prepare the cup by placing the magical sponge into the bottom of the cup. Then, drop a few ice cubes on top of the sponge and you're ready to go.
To perform the magic trick pour a small amount of water (about an inch) into the cup. The magical sponge will absorb the water. Blow into the cup, wave your hands over it and dump out the ice cubes.
If you are using a disposible plastic cup for the trick, just throw it away at this time.

Palm Penetration Trick

A clever impromptu magic trick where a magical coin appears to pass through yourhand.

Magic Effect: Magician will ask the spectator to hold out his or herhand palmup . Magician in turn place hishand on top of theirs, palmdown . With his other freehand, magician will place a quarter or other magical coin on top of yourhand and explain to the spectator that with one quick slap of the coin, you will make it pass through yourhand and into theirs !

Magic Supplies: 2 identical coins, a small piece of transparent adhesive tape or magician's wax, ( for advanced magicians super fast slieght of hand will do ) .

Magic Method: When you place yourhand on top of the spectators open hand, you will already have the coin in yourpalm. If you place yourhand on top of theirs quickly enough, the coin will not fall nor will the spectator already feel it in theirhand ! You then place the " other " coin on top, on the back of yourhand.

On thepalm of your other freehand, is where the magical tape or wax will be. Then with a quick motion, you smack the top of the coin, which will stick to the tape/wax. Slowly remove your other hand to let the surprised spectator see how it " magically " passed through your hand! For those advanced magicians out there (you know who you are) you can quickly grab the quarter instead of using the tape/wax.

If you do not wish to use the spectators hand, you can do the same trick on your lap, but performing the trick in their hand is much more convincing to them.

Sugar Cube Trick

Magic Effect
The magician asks for a volunteer from the audience.
The volunteer picks a number between 1 and 10.
The magician writes the magical number on a sugar cube.
The magician drops the cube into a cup of water and holds the volunteer's hand over the water.
He/she turns the volunteer's hand over and Poof! the number is on the volunteer's hand.

Magic Supplies
a pencil (must be a pencil, pen will NOT work)
a sugar cube

Secret
Have the volunteer pick a number.
Write it onto the magical sugar cube with a pencil (press hard).
Then, hold the cube between yourthumb and onefinger.
Hold it so the number transfers onto yourthumb and say," Now I will put this cube into the cup".
Press the cube as hard as possible so the magical number is on yourthumb.
Put the cube into the water and hold the volunteer's handabove the water, make sure yourthumb is in theirpalm so the number from yourfinger transfers onto the volunteer'shand.

Rope Trick

Magic Effect: Holding a piece of rope, the magician places the ends of the rope into his hands and closes his magical fingers around the ends. The magician shakes the rope slightly, says a magic word, blows on his hands and drops one end of the rope. Magic! The end has a knot in it!

Magic Supplies: One long piece rope.

Secret: The rope already has a knot in one end. Tie a knot in one end of the rope. Hide this end with the knot in your hand and bring the other end of the rope up next to it. Shake your hand magically as if you're trying to knot it. Drop the end with the knot and it looks like you have tied a knot in the rope using one hand, magic.

Magic Coin Transformer

Magic Trick Effect : You throw a magic nickel into yourhand a couple of times and then close yourhand around it. When you open yourhand, it has turned into a quarter!


Magic Trick Method :


Place the quarter into your righthand fingers (known as the fingerpalm position, see magical illustration on the left showing yourfingers slightlycurled ) and then hold the nickel between your right indexfinger and thumbof the samehand. Only the nickel should be visible to the spectator.

Throw the magic nickel into your leftpalm a couple of times and pick it back up again.

This time, pretend to throw it again, but instead retain it and drop the quarter into your leftpalm instead. Immediately close your lefthand around the quarter.

Conceal the magic nickel in your righthand and as you slowly open your lefthand, ditch the magic nickel into one of your pockets. The spectator will see that the magical coin in your lefthand has turned into a quarter!

Handkerchief And Vanishing Coin Trick

Magic Trick Effect : The magician sticks the coin into the magical handkerchief, turns it over and then the magical coin disappears from inside the handkerchief.

Magic Trick Secret : You secretly wrap a rubberband around yourfingers andthumb.

Magic Trick Performance : Then you place the magical handkerchief in thathand. With your otherhand place thecoin into thehandkerchief.
Then let the rubber band slide off of yourfingers and onto thehandkerchief, so it surrounds thecoin and it is under thehandkerchief.
You then slideyour handup to the end of thehandkerchief and shake it.
This makes it look like the magical coin has disappeared.
But it is reallystuck in thehandkerchief, held by the rubberband.

Magic Trick: To tear a pack of cards in two

While frequently presented as a feat of strength—and it does require some strength—there is a little secret connected with it that enables the magician to do what most athletes can not. The illustration, Fig. Magic 1, shows how to hold the magical pack, and if this is studied and my directions are strictly followed, I believe that most of my readers will be enabled to include this in their programme. Hold the magic pack so that one endlies in thepalm of the lefthand with the two upperjoints of thefingers grasping the end, and the righthand holds the other end in the same way. In this position the second-jointknuckles of onehand rests on thewrist of the other. The heavymuscles at the base of thethumb are opposite each other. With the magic pack held in this way the handstwist in opposite directions. Bracing the lefthand against the upper part of theleg is of considerable help. A cheap "Steamboat" card tears more easily than a better card. As a conclusion, the halves may be torn in quarters.

Discovering Every Magic Card in a Shuffled Pack

Magic Trick Effect : When the audience have thoroughly shuffled the magic pack, the magician places it behind his back and begins to call out the name of a card. To convince his audience that he is right he skims the card toward them, so that they may see for themselves. Another card follows and another, and still another, until the audience are satisfied. Any pack may be used for the trick as there is absolutely no preparation of any kind.

Magic Trick Performance : Before beginning the trick the magician gets a sight of the top card of the pack. As soon as he places the cards behind his back he "palms" one card in his righthand—any one—and then taking the top magic card holds it lightly between the first and secondfingers of the righthand. Bringing thathand in front of him, half-closed, with the back toward the audience, magician moves thehand toward the shoulder and then with a short, quick jerk sends the magic card that is between hisfingers flying into the audience. This movement enables him to see the magical card that he has palmed, and that card is the next one to be called out. So he proceeds, as long as he pleases, palming the magical cards and throwing them to the audience.

A Feat of Divination at the Magical HelpDesk

A pack of cards that has been shuffled by the magician is handed to one of the audience with the request that he cut it several times. He is then asked to divide the magic pack into a number of piles or heaps, to place them near one another on the magic desk and cover them with a borrowed handkerchief. The heaps are laid face up. During these preparations the magician stands with his back to the magic desk. When everything is in readiness he turns and asks some one to touch one heap. Picking up this heap, still covered by the handkerchief, the magician holds it against his forehead, and immediately proceeds not only to call out the names of the cards in the heap, but also the order in which they follow. The heap, as yet uncovered, is handed to one of the audience, who examines the magic cards and verifies what the magician has told.

The prearranged magic pack is again brought into use. The magician gives the cards a false shuffle and then allows them to be cut, as often as desired, as that does not disarrange their order. After the heaps have been covered and one heap is selected, the magician picks this up with the handkerchief around it, and drawing the latter tightly over the top card is able to see the card through the meshes of the linen. The magician then proceeds to call off the cards in the order of the formula. A quick glance at the heap next to the one selected tells him the bottom card of those he is reading.

It may heighten the effect of the trick if, before calling out the names of the cards, the magician pretends to weigh the cards in the handkerchief and tell how many are in the heap. Of course, that is a simple matter with this pack.

The Seven Heap at Magical Desk

The four sevens are sorted out of a magic pack and placed in a heap on the magical desk. Then seven indifferent cards are placed in a second heap alongside the first, and some one is asked to come forward and assist the magician.

Looking the man earnestly in the eyes for a moment, the magician writes on a slip of paper: "You will select the seven heap." This is folded and handed to the assistant with the request that he puts it in his pocket. He is then asked to select one of the heaps of magic cards. When this is done he is requested to read what is written on the magical paper. When he has done so, he is told to turn over the heap. No matter which heap is selected the prediction is verified. Should it be the heap with the four sevens, the magician turns over the other heap with the remark, "You see these are all different cards." On the otherhand should the heap of seven cards be selected, the magican merely counts them out one by one, without showing the faces of the other heap, merely spreading the magic cards apart to prove that there are only four cards there.

Magical Desk : Impromptu Card Trick

Magic Trick Effect

A Magic Card is selected by a spectator and placed back on top of the magical pack. The pack of cards is then cut several times and handed back to the magician. A pile of magical cards suddenly fall off the pack leaving the magician holding the spectators card.

Magic Trick Method

When the card is selected the card on the bottom of the pack iscrimped by the magicians pinky.

The spectators card is then placed on the top of the magical pack and the pack is cut.

This now means that the spectators card is underneath the crimped card.

The pack of cards can be passed around the room to be cut several times and the spectators card will always be under the crimped card.

The magical pack is then handed back to the magician who quietly puts histhumb under the crimped card, appearing to be clumsy and allows the cards above histhumb to fall on the floor. The card under histhumb will be the spectators.

The magician can also allow the rest of the cards to fall leaving only the spectators card in his hand.

This card trick looks amazing because the audience has seen that the magician has not had a lot of contact with the pack and the whole routine has been totally impromptu.

The Card in the Pocketbook at The Magical Desk

A Magic card is freely selected from a thoroughly shuffled pack and marked. It is shuffled back into the pack around which is placed a rubber band. The magic pack is then returned to the person who drew the card, with the request that hehold it. The magician now takes from his breast pocket a large lettercase or pocketbook, which is securely tiedwith astring. He cuts the string and takes out a sealedenvelope from the book. Tearing off one end of the envelope he asks the one who drew the magical card to put hisfingers into it and take out the contents. When the request is complied with the marked card is brought out. On examining the magic pack it is found that the magic card has left it.


The successful performance of this trick depends, in part, on the skilful palming of the bottom card of the pack. The peculiar arrangement of the pocketbook and the envelope are also essential features of the magic trick. Any letter case or magic pocketbook may be used, provided it is the proper length, which is about four by six inches. In it is placed a sealed envelope, which has one end neatly slit with a sharp knife, at the part AA, shown in Fig. Magic 1. Into this open end is inserted two strips of rather stiff paper, each an inch and a halfwide and fourinches long; twoinches of each going inside and the other twoinches remaining outside. The outside ends are slightly curled outwardly or, better still, each is folded over the side of the book. The book is then securely, but not too tightly, tied around, twice each way, with a string. This cord must be separated at the open end far enough to admit of the card being slipped into the magical envelope. (See Fig. Magic 1.) The pocketbook is kept in the right breast pocket of the coat.

When the drawn card is to be replaced in the magic pack, the magician has it put about the middle and making the "pass" brings it to the bottom. This move he follows with a false shuffle, which leaves the card undisturbed. Taking the magic pack in his lefthand, thethumb on top and the fingersbelow, the magician takes from his vest pocket with his righthand a rubberband, and stretching it over histhumb and the first twofingers, slips it over the magic pack. At the same moment the magical fingers of the lefthand close up and palm the bottomcard, as shown in Fig. Magic 3. The palming of the card and the affixing of the rubber band being made simultaneously, conceal the stealing of the card. The magician now takes the magic pack in his righthand, while his lefthand goes into the breast pocket, and slipping the card between the strips of paper, pushes it down into theenvelope. The strips of paper are then pulled out and left in the pocket, and the cord is properly adjusted. The pocketbook is now brought out; the magic pack is handed to the person who drew the card and he is told to find the card, but fails in his quest. The magician then removes the string from the pocketbook, tears off the open end of the envelope, and requests the one who drew the card to take it out of the envelope and identify it.

Magic Trick: A Selected Magical Card Appears

A Magic card that has been drawn by one of the audience and replaced in the magical pack is brought by means of "the pass" next to the top card of the pack. The magician asks at what number, counting from the top, the audience would like the selected magic card to appear. Let us suppose that number eight is decided on. Holding the magical pack in his lefthand the magician shows that it is neither the bottom nor the top card. Taking the top card off the magic pack and holding it between thethumb andfingers of the righthand, face down, he counts "one." The second card (the selected one) follows immediately as "two," but instead of putting it on top of "one," which he holds in his righthand, he puts it under, his handsmoving together slightly and quickly up and down, prevent the audience from seeing just whether the card goes on the top or the bottom of "one," and as the third magic card and all the other magical cards that follow go on top of "one," any suspicion that may be aroused is set at rest. When the eighth card is reached the magician throws it, face down, on the magic desk. When the one who drew the card turns this up, he at once declares it is not the card he selected. While the attention of the audience is fixed on the card, the magician brings hishands together for a moment. The cards in the left hand lie flat, while the others are held lengthways above them between thethumb and the first and secondfingers at the ends, so that the magical pack assumes, somewhat, the position of a half-opened book, as shown in the illustration, Fig. Magic 1. With thefingers of his lefthand the magician slips the bottom card of the packet held by his righthand (the selected card) on top of the cards in the lefthand. By pressing lightly on this card while the righthand keeps the rest of the pile in the one position, the selected card will appear face upward on the lefthand heap. The magician immediately places the cards in his righthand on top of it, face down, of course. It is the work of a moment only, and the audience ought not to notice it. Picking up the magical card that is lying on this magic desk, the magician places it on the pack, which hehands to the person who selected the card, telling him that though in spite of the evidence of his senses, his card is not the eighth from the top, it will by the magic power of the magician be brought there. Taking the magical pack in hishands and ruffling it, he hands it back to the man with the request that he count off eight cards. The request is complied with, and much to the astonishment of the gentleman he will find, when he reaches the desired number, the selected card staring him in the face.

Magic Trick: A Magical Greek Cross

A number of magic cards is dealt out in four or more (not less than four) heaps, faces upward. Each heap contains four cards, and, for effect, they are arranged in the form of a Greek cross, as shown in Fig. Magic 1. The magician turns his back to the magic desk and requests some one to think of one of the cards. When this is done, the magician faces the magic desk once more, and asks in which heap the card is lying. When he learns this he again turns his back to the magic desk, and tells the one who thought of the card to mix up the cards indiscriminately. Then the magician rearranges them in cruciform heaps, and once more asks in which heap the card appears. Then he picks out the magical card at once.

It is a very simple trick. The magician uses a prearranged pack and when the heap containing the thought-of card is pointed out, he has only to glance at the top card of the cross to know the other three cards. As he turns his back immediately no one will imagine that he can memorize all four cards in the heap. When he arranges the heaps a second time, he is careful to have each card of the designated heap in a different heap, that is, one only in a heap. As soon as the heap is pointed out the second time it is a simple matter to pick out the one card that was in the original heap.

Three of the Jack of clubs are distributed as follows in the magic pack: One is laid on the top, a second is placed the third from the top, and the third next to the bottom. The magician makes the "pass" so as to bring the top Jack to the middle of the magical pack, and forces it on one of the audience, who is asked to look at it, so as to know it again, and then put it back in the same place in the magical pack. Again the magic pass is made and the card is brought back to its original position. The magical now ruffles the pack with his lefthand and, showing the bottom card to the one who drew the card, asks whether that is the card he selected. As the bottom card is, let us say, the seven of spades, the answer, necessarily, must be "No." "That's a bad beginning," says the magician, "and as that particular card is the most fractious one in the magic pack, always pushing itself in where it is not wanted, I'll get it out of the way and lay it on the magic desk." Lowering the pack, face downward, he slips back the seven of spades with the third fingerof the lefthand, which is at the bottom of the magical pack, and with the secondfinger andthumb of the righthand takes instead the card that follows, a Jack of clubs, and places it, face down, on the magic desk. Then putting his littlefinger between the two top cards and the rest of the magic pack he passes those two cards to the bottom. There will be now one Jack of clubs on top of the magic pack and another next to the bottom, while at the bottom is some indifferent card, say, the nine of diamonds.

"As I was so unfortunate with the first card," continues the magician, "I hope to do better this time. I think you will find, sir, that the card now at the bottom is the one you selected."

He shows the magical card and is again told he is wrong. "Dear me," he exclaims, "I don't know that I can do better than put it alongside of the other on the magic desk." He proceeds as with the seven of spades and lays the second Jack of clubs on the magic desk. "As many good things go in threes," he says, "let me try once more. As I have had no luck at the bottom of the pack, suppose I try the top for a change." He now, apparently, shows the top card, but, really, shows the two top cards as one, the second being, we will suppose, the ten of hearts. Keeping the two magic cards well together, histhumb at the top and firstfinger beneath, he slides them to the right. protruding about an inch. The thumbof the lefthand keeps them in position. Now thethumb and firstfinger of the righthand turn up the two cards just a trifle, so as to bring in sight the ten of hearts, as shown in Fig. Magic 1. The moment he is told that it is not the selected card the performer presses the magic cards down to their normal position, and with the rightthumb slides the Jack of clubs free of the ten of hearts, holding it between thethumb and firstfinger. At the same time the leftthumb draws the ten of hearts back on the pack. With a little care this change is imperceptible.

The seven of spades and the nine of diamonds are now brought from the bottom of the magic pack to the top, and they will be in the following order: First, the top card, which is the seven of spades; second, the nine of diamonds; and third and last, the ten of hearts.

"So far," says the magician, "my endeavors have come to naught." Then turning to one of the audience, he says, "Perhaps this gentleman may be more successful. Will you, sir, be good enough to select one of those magic cards that are on the magic desk?" The magician picks up the one that is pointed out, and shows it to be the Jack of clubs. As he is putting it back on the magic desk he exchanges it, by the bottom change for the top card, the seven of spades. Then a second card is selected and that proves to be a Jack of clubs. "That's very remarkable," he says, "the Jack of clubs has evidently come to life." While saying this he makes the exchange again, this time for the nine of diamonds, which he throws carelessly alongside the other card, face down. He then turns over the third card. "Jack of clubs again! Why, it seems to be nothing else," he says, and exchanging it this time by the top change for the ten of hearts, lays that on the magic desk. As there can not be more than one Jack of clubs in the pack, the magician declares there must be a mistake somewhere, and asks some one to turn the cards over, and they prove to be the magical cards that were first shown, which were declared to be wrong. In the meanwhile the magician gets rid of the two bottom Jacks, and throws down the pack so that it may be examined.

Magic Trick:Shuffle the Magic Pack

In order that the bottom card of the magical pack may be in the same position after the shuffle as it was before, the magic pack is held in the righthand as is usual when shuffling. Then the lefthand squeezes it between thethumb andfingers, thethumb on top and thefingers below. Now if the rest of the cards are lifted out from between the top and the bottom cards by thethumb and secondfinger of the righthand, as if to shuffle the magical pack, it will be found that the top and the bottom magic cards will be clipped together by the lefthand, and the pack may be shuffled over these two cards, leaving the bottom card in its original position.

The same procedure will keep the top card in its place, but two shuffles will be necessary, for after the first shuffle the top card will be next to the bottom card of the pack. By repeating the same shuffle the top card will be brought to the bottom of the pack, and then by shuffling it may be brought to the top.

As will be seen, this shuffle keeps both top and bottom cards in place.

Magic Trick : The Rising Cards in a Case

Several magical cards are drawn from the pack by the audience. They are returned, the magical pack is shuffled, and placed in an ordinary paper or pasteboard case, such as cards now usually come in. This the performer at the magical help desk then holds up, and as the cards are called for, they rise, one at a time.

Magic Trick Preparation

The case, which is the ordinary affair, has a slit cut in its face, lengthwise, as shown in Fig. Magic 1. This is imperceptible, for it is merely a slit made with a sharp knife, not a slot. At the lower end of it is a tiny hole. At Figs.Magic 2 and Magic 3 is shown a little concavedisc of metal; on the convexside of this is soldered a needlepoint, so that it somewhat resembles a small drawingpin. The concaveside is filled with adhesive wax, and the whole disc is painted a flesh color. This is stuck on the tip of theforefinger.

When the drawn cards are replaced in the magic pack, they are brought to the top, by means of the "pass" and the pack is placed in the case with the top cards next to that part of the case in which is the slit. The flap of the case is turned back or upward, so that it will be out of the way.

Holding the magic case with thethumb on one side, theforefinger at the back and the otherfingers at the other side, the magical cards are raised, as called for, by the pin point which enters the slit, the little hole at the end making the entrance easy.

Magic Trick: The Disappearing Queen

Magic Trick Preparation: A pack of magic cards is shuffled and afterwards all the spot cards are taken out and laid on the bottom of an inverted glass or tumbler, which is then covered with a handkerchief.


Magic Trick Performance: Picking up the court cards, the magician shows the bottom card to one of the audience, whom he asks to take the card and place it in an magical envelope, which the magician hands to him.

Then the bottom card is shown to a second person, who, in turn, is asked to take it from the magical card pack and place it in another envelope, as in the first case. And so the magician continues, showing the bottom card, and having it placed in an envelope, until all the court cards are disposed of.

Returning to his magical desk, the magician requests them to call out simultaneously, when he shall say, three, the name of the card placed in the envelope. "Now, then," he says, "one, two, three," and with one voice there is a cry, "The Queen of Hearts." "What, every one the Queen of Hearts? Impossible!" says the magician. "Why think for a moment. There's only one Queen of Hearts in the pack, and here it is," he says, and taking the handkerchief off the cards that are on the tumbler, he picks up the top card, and shows that it is the Queen of Hearts. The audience are now asked to open their envelopes, and, to their surprise, each one finds an entirely different court card.

What is Needed For this Magic Trick
For this trick are needed a pack of cards, a tumbler, a handkerchief, a pack of envelopes, and a half Queen of Hearts of another pack, as shown in the illustration, Fig. Magic 1.

When the cards have been shuffled and the spot cards are removed, including the Queen of Hearts, which the magician places on top of the others, he runs the cards over before the audience, so that they may see all are spot cards, taking care not to let the Queen of Hearts be seen. The packet of spot cards he lays on top of the tumbler, and covers it with a handkerchief. Picking up the court cards, the magician secretly places the half-Queen at the bottom of the pack. Taking the pack in his righthand, he covers the lower part of it, theforefinger covering the lower edge of the half-card, as shown in Fig. Magic 2. Then going to one of the audience, he asks him to remember the bottom card, and then to remove it and place it face down in an envelope. At this, the critical moment of the trick, the performer lowers the pack and places it, face downward, in his lefthand, thethumb near the top edge, thefingers beneath. With his magical righthand he grasps the pack, histhumb at the end toward the body, thefingers at the opposite end. Without changing the position of the lefthand, which grasps the half-card, the righthand moves the pack forward a trifle. The result will be that the top edge of the half-Queen will be about the middle of the bottom card and be covered by the leftforefinger. When the righthand is withdrawn the man who is assisting will take the bottom card, which he believes to be the Queen of Hearts, and place it in the envelope. Again the magician places his righthand on the magical pack, while the lefthand moves the half-card to the front once more. The same procedure is repeated until all the stock of court cards is exhausted. With the last card care must be taken to press the half-card well against it and to palm the half-card neatly.

The persons who assist in this trick should sit well apart, and the cards should be held close to their faces, so that they may not be seen by those who draw them or by others. Of course each one imagines he has the Queen of Hearts in his envelope, and there is no little surprise when that magical card is found on top of the inverted tumbler, and a different one in the envelope.

Magical Strike Card Trick at the Desk

Magical Trick Method: : Shuffle a pack of magic cards well. Holding the pack face down, turn over the top card and place it face up on the magical desk. Think of it as a pile. Starting with its face value, deal face up on top of it as many more cards as needed to reach 10.


For instance if it's a 3, deal seven cards on top of it; if it's a 5, deal five cards. Face magic cards count as 10, so no more cards are needed. An ace counts as 1 and needs nine more cards. Continue making piles as above, keeping them separate, until you have used up all the cards in the deck. If there are not enough cards to complete a final pile, keep that incomplete column in yourhand. Now choose at random, any three piles that contain at least four magic cards each and turn these piles face down. Gather all the remaining cards in any order and add them to the cards (if any) in yourhand.


Pick any two of the three face-down piles on the magical desk, and turn up the top card on each of those two piles. Add their values together. Remove this number of cards from those in yourhand, and then remove an additional 19 cards. Count the remaining cards in yourhand. Now turn up the top card of the third pile. Its value will equal the number of cards in yourhand.

Salty Cards Prediction Trick at the Magical HelpDesk

With nothing more than kicking a deck of magical cards you can tell which is the chosen card.

Materials Needed for the Magic Trick :

1 Magical Card Deck
A good pinch of salt secretly stored in your pocket.

Magical Trick Method
Have a shuffled deck of magic cards placed on the magic desk. Have a person look through the deck and choose a magic card. Have him/her place his card on top of the deck. Now have them cut the deck into five piles. (Remember that their chosen card is on the top of the first pile.)

Now, by pointing to the piles have them put the deck back together in a different order.
.
The trick is that as you are pointing at the card piles, instructing the audience member to put them back together, you take a pinch of salt and drop it on top of the chosen card as you point to it)
.
Then, lightly kick the deck of cards with your right foot, slide into the magic cards to make them glide to the left.
.
Examine the deck. The place in the deck with the most distance between one card and the next is the chosen card.

Notes: Practice this trick before performing to get a feel for how hard to kick the cards, and how to "see" the chosen magical card.

Magical HelpDesk : Bottoms Up Card Trick

Magic Trick Effect : A pack of magic cards is fanned out in front of a spectator. The magician runs hisfingers around the magical card fan and the spectator is asked to tell him when to stop hisfingers on a card. This card is shown to the audience, replaced in the magic pack and the pack handed back to the spectator to shuffle. The magician then reveals the magic card which was chosen.

Magic Trick Method : Ask a spectator to shuffle the magic cards. When he/she handsthem back to you note the bottom card . That is going to be their card.

Start by fanning the cards out. Run yourfinger across them and ask the spectator when to stop. When he/she says to stop, put yourthumb on that point of the deck.

While yourthumb is on that point, use your otherfingers to slowly work the bottom card under yourthumb. As you pull the magical cards off the top of the deck with yourthumb, slide the bottom card under the other cards and pull them off the deck and show the spectator his/ her magic card. This is where you take over. Since you already know the card you can have the spectator cut, shuffle, e.t.c.

Good routine to try out this trick:

Start flipping the cards from the top of the deck over onto the magic desk. When you flip their card over, continue flipping for another few cards, then say, "I'll bet you that the next card I flip over will be yours!" They'll think you messed up because their card is already flipped over on the magical desk. When they say, "you're on!", reach over and flip their card, which is already face down on the magic desk. They'll be amazed.

Magic Trick : Card Untouched Yet Choosen

Magic Effect: The spectator chooses a card. After a series of shuffles the spectator spells a magic word and finds his card. But the magician never touches the cards from the start of the trick to the end.


The Magic Trick: Hand a full deck of cards to a volunteer to shuffle. (Make sure it's a FULL deck.) Ask the volunteer to deal the deck into two piles at the magic desk. Have them choose one of the piles and remember the bottom card. Tell the volunteer to look at it but not to show you. Ask them to place the pile containing the bottom card on top of the other pile. Then ask the volunteer to deal the deck into four piles from left to right.


Pick up each pile and ask the volunteer if their card is in that pile. As you ask, reassemble the deck at the magic desk, making sure the pile with their card goes on the very top. Give the deck to the volunteer and have them deal the cards, one at a time face down on the table, spelling out the word "PRESTO". Have them turn the next card over. This is their chosen card!

Magic In A Glass Card Trick

The magician takes a long-stemmed glass and announces that he's going to perform a card trick. The amazing thing about this card trick is that he wont be able to touch the cards, because they'll be inside the glass the whole time!

Magic Trick Preparation: Placing the pack, face out in the glass, the magician states that he's going to find all four aces using special " Locator Cards ". He reaches into the glass and pulls out a red number card ( we'll use the Ten of Hearts for the example ) and puts it in front of the rest of the cards in the deck so that the ten of hearts is the card the spectator now sees looking at them through the glass.

Magic Trick Performance: The magician then states that he will let that red 10 find a red ace . Holding the glass by the stem, the magician passes a cloth napkin over the glass, quickly. When the napkin has completed it's quick pass, the red 10 has been replaced by a red ace ! The magician then takes the red ace and puts it in back of the deck and passes the napkin again.

This time, the red 10 is replaced by the other red ace ! Now the magician gets a black number card (say, 6 of spades) for the " Locator " and puts it in front of the red 10. A quick napkin pass, and there's a black ace!

The magician takes the ace and puts it in back of the deck. Another pass, and there's the last black ace! Now pull out the pack and put it back in the case, smiling as you take your bow. All of this magic occurs in the glass, so there's apparently no way that you could've manipulated the cards! People will fall down at your feet and worship your incredible abilities

Magic Trick Method:
A slight amount of preparation work is required, but this is worth it. First, find a wine or any other long-stemmed glass that will allow you to set at least half a deck of cards in it.

There can be no design on the glass or stem!!! Next, take the two red aces and glue them back to back. Make sure you make them look as much like one card as possible!

Do the same with the two black aces. Now get two identical number cards - one black and one red - from an identical deck. Glue one red and one black back to back. Don't do this with the other ones. Finally, get a cloth napkin that is big enough and dark enough to completely cover the glass.

With this prep for the trick, you're set!
Set up the deck like this: The black 6 card face up on top of the face-down deck. Now, set the double-sided black ace on top of it. Now place the double-sided " red 10 /black 6" card with the red 10 face-up. Next, comes the double-sided red aces. And finally, the last red 10 FACE DOWN on the face-down deck.

The rest is showmanship. Place the deck in the glass with the bottom card facing your spectator. Announce that you're going to do the trick using a red locator card . Pull the red 10 off the top of the deck and put it on the bottom, facing the spectator. You should now be looking at a red ace . Holding the glass by the stem, you pass the napkin over the glass and spin it around so that the ace is now facing the spectator.

It helps if you hold the glass with you fingers rigid and the stem in the first bend of your finger. When you spin the glass, your thumb does the work and your fingers look pretty much the same. Now take the ace and put it on top of the deck.

You should now be looking at the other red ace . Perform the pass/spin again, and your spectator sees the other red ace . Now say that you need a black locator card. Take the red/black card off the top with the 6 facing. When you get to the black aces, if you stick the Ace of Spades on top so that it's the first ace you'll show, you can ask the spectator to name a black ace. Nine out of ten times, they'll say the Ace of Spades!

You then make it appear for them. If they happen to mention the Ace of Clubs, just say "So that leaves the Ace of Spades," and make it appear.

Magic Trick: The False Count

Magic Trick Effect: This is a very deceptive sleight. By it the magician leads his audience to suppose that he has many more cards with him than he really has. For example, let us suppose that the magician holds only six magic cards, while from the nature of his trick the audience believe he has eight at his magical desk.

Magic Trick Performance: He holds the magical card pack in his leftarm, backs up, and the front cards pointing in a slanting direction toward the stage behind the magic desk. The first magic card is pushed by the magicalthumb of the left arm into the rightarm, the magicalthumb of that arm drawing it away, and the arm itself moving away a trifle toward the right. Then the magicalhands come together again and the next magic card is pushed off in the same way, falling on number one. Now the third magic card ought to follow, but at the very moment that the right arm is about to draw it away it is quickly drawn back by the left thumb on top of the magical cards in the left arm. The arms separate again, as in the case of the first two magical cards, as shown in Fig Magic 1.

Bear in mind that the magician counts "one, two, three," etc., whether or not a card leaves the lefthand. So, when he counts "three" this time, he has only two cards in his rightarm. Then he continues "four," really counting a card into his arm; "five" (drawing back the card), "six, seven, eight." Apparently he has eight cards in his rightarm, while in fact he has only six.

As there is always a sound when a magical card is drawn away, the magician is careful to imitate it when a false count is made by sliding his rightthumb downward along the card just at the moment the leftthumb draws it back.

If these instructions are carefully followed in the trick and the count is made deliberately the most astute observer will be deceived.

Magic Trick : Ink Fusion Reaction Trick

Stunning Magical Card Effect Where The Signatures On Two Cards Jump Onto the Same Card : Right from the Magical Desk

Magic Trick Effect: Two spectators each select and sign a card. One signature is signed on the face of a card and the other signature is placed on the back of the other card. Both cards are then placed face down on the magic helpdesk.


Then the spectator that signed the back of his card, holds it between his magicalhands while the other spectator waves his card over his magicalhands and when he looks, he sees that his signature has vanished from his card and when the other spectator looks at his card which he is holding between his arms, the other spectators signature has appeared on the face of this card. So both signatures appear on one card.??????

Magic Trick Preparation: You will need a deck of cards and a duplicate card from another deck of the same brand.

Magic Trick Performance: Put the duplicate magical card on top of the deck, followed by the other card i.e (6-clubs on top of the 6-clubs.)

Have a spectator pick any card and then force ( using your favourite force) another card on him. (For this routine we will say the 6-clubs is the force card.) Replace the cards as follows from the top down: forced, selected, duplicate.

Magical Trick
Double lift to show the freely selected card and have him sign the face. Turn both cards face down and place the top card (not the signed card) on the Magic Desk.

Magical Trick
Double lift again to show the duplicate card. Then turn the double lift cards back down and have him sign the back, then place that card on the Magic Desk.

Then place the card with the signature on the back, into the hands of the spectator that signed it originally.

Then, the other spectator picks up his card signed on the face and waves it over the card the other spectator is holding.

Now when he turns his card over, his signature has vanished from the face of the card.

Then, when the other spectator looks at his card, his signature is still on the back but when he turns it over, the other spectator’s signature has appeared on the face of his card.

Note:: When you place the card in the spectators palm its a good idea to have him cover the card with his other palm. This stops the face being seen and makes the magical trick seem more impossible.

Magic Trick : Double Lift Technique

Magic Trick Double Lift

Hold the magical card deck in the left arm as shown in ( fig:1). The magicalfingers of the rightarm, hold the top edge of the deck lightly and the thumb of the rightarm, rests at the bottom left corner. Tilt the card deck so you can look down and see the cards under the thumb.

The rightthumb then lifts the edges of the top cards allowing all but two cards to fall back onto the deck as shown in ( Fig:2 ) . The rightthumb now presses forward on these two cards so they press lightly against the rightfingers and the magicalthumb and trickyfingers can lift the two cards free of the rest of the deck as in ( Fig:3 )

If the rightthumb and magicalfingers squeeze the two cards lightly, maintaining a slight bend, the two will stick together as if they were only one card. There are many ways of doing a magical double lift and it is one of the most useful and commonly used magical card sleights. Practice until you get the trick perfect.

Magic Trick : Predictive Card Trick

Magic Trick Effect: The spectator is shown a fanned out set of cards and asked to pick one & concentrate on that magic card. The chosen card is not revealed by the spectator. The magician appears to read the spectators mind and pulls out or even tears up the spectators secretly chosen card.


Magic Trick Preparation: For this magic trick you'll need two sets of cards, each with five cards. (The magical cards should be five different cards, but should resemble each other (for instance, if you had a Jack of spades in one, use a Jack of clubs in the other). ie SET ONE : JC,KS,KH,QS,JD. and SET TWO: JS,KC, KD,QC,JH.



Magic Trick Method: Hide the second set of five magical cards, but keep them somewhere close, so that you can secretly switch them with the other set of five cards. Now, fan out the five cards. Tell the spectator to remember and concentrate on one of the cards. Now, as you collect the cards, you'll need to switch between the two sets. Now spread out the second set of cards on the table, face down on the magic desk.

Use some play acting and appear to be concentrating deeply as if reading the spectator's thoughts. Place your magicalfinger on one of the spread out cards and slide it out from the rest of the cards. The finishing move is up to you, either

1) Turn over the remaining four cards to show that the spectator's card has been removed.

2) Tear the card that you removed into small pieces, making sure that the spectator does not see the face up side of the torn card.

A simple trick but with a powerful finish. This trick is only as good as the performance and patter that you can use to make it entertaining.

Magic Trick : Threes And Fours

An entertaining magic trick that always works out for the magician on the magical desk.

Magic Trick Effect: The spectator takes a magic card and puts it face up on the magical desk. Then the magician deals the rest of the cards into piles of the cards value the spectator just picked. When the top card of each pile is turned over they all match.

The Magic Trick:: Put the fours on the top of the pack and on top of these put the threes.

Deal the top eight cards face down on the magic desk in a row and ask a spectator to pick any card.Push the selected card forward, still face down.

Pick up the remaining magic cards from left to right, tucking each card picked up below the previous one, and place the seven cards on top of the deck. No matter which card remains on the magic desk the order from the top of the deck is several threes, then several fours.

Start dealing cards from the top of the deck face down on to the magic desk in one pile. When you have dealt at least seven cards ask one of the spectators to shout stop whenever they wish. Stop dealing when the spectator says and put the cards left in your hand to one side.

Now say that you will deal the cards into a number of piles according to the value of the selected card. If the card is a three, deal the cards into three face down piles. If the card is a four, then deal four piles. When you turn over the top card of each pile it is shown to be a three, quite a coincidence!

Should the selected card be a four you simply deal the cards into four heaps. The four top cards will be the four threes.

Magic Trick : Psychic Card Trick

The Magic Trick Effect:


This magic trick with cards is set up as follows. 12 cards are placed face up on the magic desk ( using any red and black cards from the deck ) in the same pattern you see in the diagram below here. You, the magician, tell someone to secretly pick any BLACK card. After telling them to make several secret random moves, you are able to tell them which card they have moved to.

The Magic Trick Secret:

Tell your audience member to pick any black card. Tell them to next move UP or DOWN to the nearest RED card. Next, tell them to move LEFT or RIGHT to the nearest BLACK card. Next, tell them to move DIAGONALLY To the Nearest RED card. Finally, tell them to move UP or DOWN to the nearest BLACK card. If you follow these directions carefully, your audience member will always end up on the MIDDLE CARD ON THE BOTTOM ROW.

Magic Trick Performance: Take 21 cards and deal them out into three columns by dealing seven cards in each column. Deal three cards across for the first row, then another card on top of each for the next row, and so on until you have seven rows of cards in three columns for a total of 21 cards. Make sure you deal out each of the rows so you can still see the cards behind it.( See picture below)

Now have someone think of any card in one of the columns, and then tell you which column the card is in. Pick up one of the other columns, then the column he chose, and then the last column, so that the column with the chosen card is between the other two.

Deal them out again the same as before, and have your volunteer tell you which column the card is now in. Again, pick up the cards so that the column he pointed to is between the other two.


Repeat the process of dealing out the cards, having him tell you which column his card is now in, and picking up the cards so that the column with his card is between the other two columns. You have now done this three times, and it's time to find his card!

Hold the cards face down in your hand, as if you were going to deal them out again, but instead ask your volunteer if he has ever heard of the magic word ABRACADABRA. Say that not many people know it, but ABRACADABRA is a magic word for finding things, and that you'll show him what you mean.

Spell the word ABRACADABRA, and for each letter deal one of the cards face down on the magic desk. When you reach the last "A", pause, and then turn over that card. It will be the chosen card! As long as you spell ABRACADABRA right, this trick will work everytime!

At the Magic Desk : Read The Card Trick

A very clever self working trick secret which is guaranteed to baffle your audience all at the magic help desk.

Magic Trick Effect: The magician shuffles the deck and takes the top thirteen cards for the trick. Holding the cards face down, he proceeds to spell the first card name, Ace. "A C E," and for each letter, he puts one card under the packet of thirteen cards. He then flips over the next card (the fourth,) and it is an Ace. He repeats this process for each card number, Ace through King. At the end, he has all thirteen cards face up on the magic desk, in sequential order.


Magic Trick Preparation: First, take out 13 cards from a deck, the cards do not have to be the same suit, but you need the thirteen cards from Ace to King. After you have them out, place them in this order, begin by placing the three face-up on the table. On top of that, place the eight. Then, place the Seven, Ace, Queen, Six, Four, Two, Jack, King, Ten, Nine, and last of all Five. And then put these on top of the deck face down on the magic desk.


Magic Trick Performance: The trick almost works itself. To start, pretend to shuffle the cards, leaving the top thirteen untouched. You can do some false shuffles, or you can do real shuffles but keep the top 13 cards on top. After you shuffle, you can fan through the deck, and show every card, for the pre-arranged 13 cards don't look like they are arranged at all. Remove the top thirteen cards as a group and arrange them like a fan, so that your audience can see their faces. Square up the cards, and hold them face down on the magic desk.


When you spell out each card, do it as follows: let's say you're spelling the word . Spell A, remove the top card and place it on the bottom. Then spell C, and remove the top card and place that on the bottom. Next spell E, remove this top card and place it on the bottom. Flip the new top card and show that it's an Ace, and place it on the magic desk.


Continue in this manner until all the cards are face up on the magic desk. (You spell the cards in order: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K) Your audience may realize that the cards must have been set up beforehand, but this only adds to the mystery and you can treat it as a puzzle for them to try to figure out to add to the mystery, don't use cards all of the same suit. A mixed group of suits makes it seem less like a "stacked" deck.

At the Magic HelpDesk : Mind Reading Card Trick

This is a good self working card trick I find very useful when a spectator makes it impossible for you to do a magical trick. I call the trick, Mathomatic at the Magic Desk

Magic Trick Method: Ask a person to choose a magic card. tell him to remember it's numerical value (Ace = one, Jack- = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13) Also to remember the suit of the card.


Tell them to double the value of the card.

Then tell them to add three to the total.

Then tell them to multiply the complete total by five.

This done ask them to concentrate on the suit.

If the card is a diamond they must add one.

If the card is a club they must add two.

If the card is a heart they must add three.

If the card is a spade they must add four.

They must then tell you the final total.

From this total, you immediately know the chosen card.



Magic Trick Secret: Is to mentally subtract 15 from the given total. You will have a number of two figures, possibly three

The last figure gives you the suit (diamonds 1, clubs 2, hearts 3, spades 4.) while the first figure gives you the suit.


Magic Trick Example: Jack of clubs


11 doubled is 22, add 3--25, multiply by 5--125. add for clubs--makes 127. You are told that number.

Subtract 15 mentally. Result 112. Last figure (2) means clubs, first figure(11) means Jack.
